What it is

Rum is a distilled spirit made from sugarcane-derived material such as molasses or sugarcane juice. Fermentation, distillation and ageing can create a broad aromatic range, from light fruity esters to darker molasses, spice, vanilla and oak-associated notes.

Rum as a fragrance note

In perfumery, rum is best treated as an established boozy note or accord rather than as a claim that literal beverage rum was poured into the formula. A rum effect can suggest:

  • fermented fruitiness
  • molasses or burnt sugar
  • vanilla-like sweetness
  • warm spice
  • oak or barrel-like depth

“Dark rum” generally pushes that reference toward a denser, warmer and more molasses-like direction.

Provenance rule

The Aroma Book links source wording such as rum, dark rum or rum accord to this page as a fragrance-note concept. That relationship records the source description; it does not claim the perfume contains alcoholic beverage rum as a raw ingredient.
