Musk

What it is

Natural musk is an aromatic secretion associated with the scent gland of male musk deer in the genus Moschus. It was historically prized in perfumery and medicine, but trade in musk deer and natural musk is conservation-sensitive and regulated internationally through CITES.

Muscone, a macrocyclic ketone, is one of the best-known characteristic odorants associated with natural musk.

What “musk” means today

In contemporary perfumery, the word musk usually does not mean natural deer musk. It more often refers to one or more synthetic musk materials or to an accord designed to create a musky effect.

That modern family is chemically diverse. Different synthetic musks can smell clean, powdery, fruity, warm, skin-like, sweet or more animalic, so “musk” should not be treated as a single fixed note.

What to notice

When studying a musky effect, ask whether it reads as:

• clean and laundry-like
• soft, powdery or cosmetic
• warm and skin-like
• sweet or fruity
• deep, animalic or slightly dirty
• diffusive and persistent rather than overtly strong

Those directions may come from very different materials even when they are all described as musky.

Conservation context

CITES has long highlighted illegal trade and conservation pressure affecting musk deer. Synthetic alternatives became important not only for cost and consistency but also because they reduce reliance on wildlife-derived musk.

Keep the label precise
