What it is

Orange blossom absolute comes from the flowers of bitter orange, Citrus × aurantium. It begins with the same flowers used to make neroli, but the extraction process is different.

The absolute is obtained through solvent extraction rather than ordinary steam distillation. That difference preserves a different balance of aromatic material and gives orange blossom absolute its own identity.

Orange blossom absolute versus neroli

These two materials should stay separate:

Neroli is the distilled essential oil of bitter-orange flowers.
Orange blossom absolute is the solvent-extracted flower material.

They overlap, but orange blossom absolute is commonly experienced as richer, sweeter, denser and more waxy, while neroli is usually brighter, fresher and more volatile.

waxy petals
citrus-floral lift
soft greenness
warm indolic or animalic depth at higher concentration

It can feel simultaneously luminous and plush.

One plant, several distinct materials

Bitter orange also supplies neroli from the flowers, petitgrain mainly from leaves and young twigs, and peel-derived citrus materials. Keeping those products separate makes the material library more useful than treating them all as simply “orange.”
