What it is
Freesia refracta is a South African flowering plant and one of the botanical references behind the familiar freesia scent idea.
In modern perfume, freesia is commonly encountered as a reconstructed accord designed to evoke the clean, airy smell of the flower.
What to notice
A freesia effect can suggest:
- fresh petals
- airy sweetness
- citrus lift
- light pepper
- watery-green freshness
- a clean, transparent floral body
It usually feels less creamy and less indolic than jasmine, gardenia or tuberose.
Why it works as a perfume note
Freesia is useful when a composition needs floral presence without heavy richness.
Its fresh peppery-citrus quality can connect easily with fruit, muguet-style florals, magnolia and clean musks.
Botanical reference versus accord
A perfume listing freesia should not automatically be tagged as containing a natural Freesia refracta extract.
