Elemi

What it is

Elemi is another trade name that can refer to more than one botanical source. In fine fragrance, Manila elemi is especially associated with Canarium luzonicum, a tree native to the Philippines.

Kew also records other plants historically associated with the non-scientific name elemi, so source precision matters.

What to notice

Elemi often combines:

• lemon-like brightness
• peppery freshness
• pine or conifer facets
• clear balsamic resin
• soft incense
• a faintly waxy or spicy drydown

It is generally more sparkling and volatile than heavy balsams such as labdanum or benzoin.

Role in perfumery

Elemi can act as a bridge between citrus top notes and resinous bases. Its peppery-citrus quality can brighten incense structures without removing their resinous character.

Keep Manila elemi specific

If a source says Canarium luzonicum or Manila elemi, that identity should be preserved. Generic “elemi” can otherwise hide materially different botanical origins.
