Cypress

What it is

The classic Mediterranean cypress reference is Cupressus sempervirens. Kew records its native range from the eastern Mediterranean toward Iran.

Perfumery cypress oil is commonly distilled from leafy branches, twigs and needles rather than from the timber alone.

What to notice

Cypress can suggest:

• dry green wood
• conifer needles
• resin
• faint smoke
• mineral dryness
• aromatic freshness
• warm woody persistence beneath the opening

It is often less sweet and less overtly balsamic than fir materials.

Role in perfumery

Cypress works well in woody, aromatic, incense and Mediterranean-style compositions. It can add coniferous freshness while remaining more austere than a lush forest-balsam accord.

Keep conifers distinct

Pine, fir, juniper and cypress overlap in terpenic freshness, but they should not be treated as synonyms. The botanical identity matters whenever the source provides it.
