What it is
Carrot seed oil comes from Daucus carota. In everyday and trade language the aromatic units are called seeds, though botanically they are the mature dry fruits containing the seed.
Kew notes that wild carrot was historically valued for its fragrant leaves, seeds and flowers long before modern cultivated carrots were selected mainly for their edible roots.
What to notice
Carrot seed oil can suggest:
- dry earth
- woody root
- carrot skin
- warm seed spice
- dusty sweetness
- a faint violet or orris-adjacent effect
- herbal dryness
It generally smells much drier and less sugary than the orange vegetable might suggest.
Chemistry varies
Recent analysis of carrot seed essential oil found carotol and sabinene among major constituents in the sample studied. Other work on Daucus carota shows substantial variation by subspecies, geography and extraction.
That means no single GC profile should be treated as universal.
Carrot seed versus carrot root
Carrot seed oil is not an extraction of the familiar edible taproot. They share botanical identity but are distinct aromatic references.
For perfumery, the seed oil is especially useful for earthy, rooty and orris-adjacent effects.
